WHAT IS FOULING?

Generally speaking bottom fouling is caused by the following:

  • BARNACLES - Barnacles attach to boat bottoms to feed.
  • SLIM - Slime produces a syrupy type medium in which algae settle.
  • WEED - Weed can stay attached to the hull.

The amount, type and severity of fouling will vary due to;

  • Water Quality.
  • Water Temperature.
  • Pollution.
  • Speed of Water Flow.
  • Shade.
  • Water PH.

A dirty and fouled bottom will have a direct effect on your vessel's speed and efficiency.  Worse, if a vessel's bottom is not properly maintained, serious and costly hull problems can result.  Also, the vaule of the vessel is reduced.

HOW TO MINIMIZE THE EFFECTS OF FOULING

A good well-maintained bottom goes a long way in reducing the effects of fouling.

The keys to a good bottom job are: Preparation, Quality Paint and Professional Application.  At New River Marina we offer brand name bottom paint including, Micron, Seahawk, Pettit, Trinidad, Bottom Kote, Ultra and marPro.

WHICH TYPE OF COATING SHOULD I USE?

ABLATIVE ANTIFOULINGS:  Wears down like a bar of soap at a controlled rate, which results in always having fresh biocide at the surface of the paint.  There is no build-up of coatings that will eventually have to be removed from the surface.

HARD ANTIFOULINGS:  Hard epoxy resin technology provides a hard hull, which allows full season protection and scrubability for fast boats and boats that get serviced regularly by a diver.
